Holi colours all of India

Holi colours all of India

The united colours of Holi festival were everywhere as millions of Indians Wednesday drenched(1) each other lavishly(2) with wild colours and affection.

Children armed with water pistols fashioned after space age weapons went around squirting(3) coloured water and hurling(4) water balloons as their elders greeted each other by applying 'gulal' powder on each other's faces.

Across the country, it almost seemed that the "Rang de basanti" (colour me yellow) song from the Bollywood film "Silsila" based on the Holi theme had become the national anthem as it blared(5) forth from homes, cars, portable stereos and roadside loudspeakers.

On Tuesday evening, 'Holika Dahan' bonfires(6) were lit in many towns and cities across north India to mark the beginning of the two-day Holi festival.

In Mumbai, the colours of Holi swept through the streets of the megalopolis(7) as well as other parts of Maharashtra as millions came out to soak(8) themselves in myriad(9) hues(10).

Loudspeakers and music systems blared out popular songs like "Rang barse" and "Holi khele Raguveera".

In Punjab, rain dances scheduled for Wednesday morning to celebrate Holi faced a real dampener(11) with heavy morning showers washing away quite a few arrangements.

In rain dances, fire engines(12) and water tankers shoot water into the air and revellers(13) sing and sway n the cascade(14).

The rain, which started as a drizzle(15), turned into a virtual downpour(16), forcing people to remain indoors here.

In the Sikh holy town of Anandpur Sahib, thousands of devout paid obeisance(17) at Gurudwara Keshgarh Sahib on the occasion of the Sikh festival of Hola Mohalla that coincides with(18) Holi.

Holi was celebrated with enthusiasm in Rajasthan. Noisy parades, music and dance performances, as well as plenty of coloured water, marked the celebrations in state capital Jaipur.

The young and old went around Jaipur, meeting friends, throwing colour and greeting each other. Some foreign tourists too were seen moving about the streets drenched in colours.

"Oh I loved it...people were putting colours on each other so I purchased a packet of dry colour," said John, a tourist from Australia.

His friend David echoed similar views: "We came out of our hotel early in the morning and decided to walk around to get a feel of the festival...We are just loving it."

Hola Mohalla.
